Has anyone got any advice about how to avoid cheap fakes and/or outright fraud when buying stuff from high end labels like Ralph Lauren, J Press and Hermes on Ebay?

1. Buy from reputable sellers, particularly those discussed here. Feedback isn't reliable.
2. Don't buy from bulk sellers in Asia.
3. Know what you're buying, and the details to look for.
4. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
5. Go with your gut. If something seems suspicious, let it go.

Not to overgeneralize, but I would also avoid sellers from China/asia offering European fashions, particularly if they're offering dozens of the same item. In my experience, the most commonly faked items are what I call the "logo" brands: Gucci, LV, Ferragamo, etc. I don't think that kind of stuff is favored by members of this forum, but still. I don't think fakes of small production, "artisan" clothing is that common on ebay. Generally mass production is conducive to fakes.

The only real way to be absolutely sure is to avoid e-Bay... Not trying to be sarcastic, but I read an article recently that stated something like 95% of the LV articles sold on e-Bay were fake. Those are not good odds for LV fans.

What about J Press and less branded of the high/mid end fashion labels (i.e Cable Car, Brooks Bros, O'Connells as opposed to Armani, LV?)

I can't imagine anyone faking J Press. Brooks Brothers maybe, although these days it couldn't be a lot worse than the genuine article.

The main things to watch out for are LV, Hermes, Gucci, Diesel, Prada, etc. The big fashiony labels.

That said, you do see fakes of the better known high-end tailored labels like Brioni or Attolini, especially in shirts and ties, but not nearly as often, and they're usually easy to spot.

If you're unsure, post the auction and we can usually arrive at a consensus. You might also consult the recommended sellers thread.

OTOH, I've heard people say they liked the fake PS shirts enough to just keep them, so...

100% fake. Just look at the "Brioni" shirts they're offering... http://cgi.ebay.com/BRIONI-SHIRT-LOO...QQcmdZViewItem and I mean, if they're not an authorized Brioni dealer, what are they doing with over 100 brand-new Brioni ties? And they've been a member on eBay since 2000... but only 2 transactions before this year!

Don't buy ties from sellers in the Middle East or Asia (and watch out because some operate out Canada too

Or avoid Louis Vuitton...
