How to add a separate vest to a two-piece suit?

Is it ok to add an odd waistcoat to a two piece suit, and if yes what are the guidelines to making it look good with

Lighter color suit/pants (gray or khaki)
* I'm assuming you'd want the waistcoat to be a similar hue as the two piece suit?
* But is it more appropriate for the vest to be slightly darker or lighter than the suit?

Would you ever try to add a separate waistcoat to a pinstriped suit?

The three things I would consider are the colours, type of cloth and pattern. I suppose you could add cut to that too but think about how much waistcoat will be on show. I like to be a bit avant garde and go for contrast but do with whatever you feel comfotable with. Just try stuff out.

I don't think you want the vest too close in hue to the suit or it will look like you are trying to match, but failing. I think generally an odd vest looks better with odd coat and trousers. Striped pants, buff or grey vest, and a dark jacket is a smart (if a bit formal) look. With a khaki suit, maybe a robin's egg blue vest?

You might be able to wear a camel waistcoat as you describe, but that is old fashioned. In honesty. don't.

No, quite the opposite, if it's not part of a 3-piece (from the exact same fabric) then you want it to obviously contrast.

Yes, it is okay and the key for pulling it off is color contrast, between the waistcoat and the suit.
Since it is a suit, I would go with a linen waistcoat in pastel color, cream being my favorite.

Agreed. And, Gabriel, the odd (not speaking about the different fabric, but the odd design and cloth) waistcoat should not be donned in formal settings.

To me it looks good, but I don't know how proper it is to do such a thing. I think it would look nice with the light blue cotton suit I've ordered.

Yeah, it looks good, Very classic, pre 2nd WW. Go with a pastel color, for the db waistcoat, cream being the most versatile.

I'm getting a suit and wanted to get an odd vest that I could use under other suits.

Thinking of a vest made of this material to go under a charcoal suit... would it also work under a light grey, or blue?

Opinions?

It would have to not match any of the suits and not be inherently strange or the wrong formality. Therefore, it probably needs to be navy or gray, and only charcoal might go with all three. A solid charcoal vest with a boldly patterned charcoal suit likely would be okay, though if that's the suit, sorry, it doesn't look very good.

I quite enjoyed this and mimicked it for an evening event (although my blue vest was heavy textured cotton, rather than velvet). I agree that it needs to contrast so that it's clear that the vest isn't part of the suit, yet still be coherent. I think that since the vest will probably draw a lot of visual attention, the other elements should be simple.
