How should a fitted dress shirt fit?

Hi,
I just wanted to know the "proper fit" for a dress shirt, taking a non-overweight man. I am a 37-38 chest and a 31 waist, 5ft '10 . I am planning on having 3 of my dress shirts tapered, but I dont know by how much. They look a bit baggy on me and would like to slim it down. I was just curious to know if there's a general ratio rule or not? If not, what do you guys suggest I should taper it down to? (The shoulder/back/chest fits perfect btw)

One person's fitted is another person's full.

i don't think theres a ratio.

I believe I have a 4 inch allowance around my chest and 4 inch allowance around my waist area

You might consider watching some movies with "well-dressed" actors in movies which they are wearing dress shirts. Look for pics too. These people have been discussed ad-nauseum around here. Should be easy to find.

That will give you a big picture. Details have been discussed at length around here too. Look at the "critique my Jantzen" threads.

Cheers,
D

Fit is so personal that you need to get your tailor to pin the shirt and then look at in a three-way mirror. If need be, have it re-pinned until you see a fit that you want. Maybe get one shirt done, wear it, and then get other shirts done.

Work with just one shirt initially, until you and your tailor arrive at something that you're happy with. Then have that be a model shirt that from all others can be replicated.

Follow Toiletduck.

4" over your chest and waist is a trim fit. Sometimes I do 5 over the chest and 4 on the waist. Try one and see if it is what you want. If you are experimenting, maybe your tailor will baste one for you to try.

Didn't really elaborate in my post at all...sorry.

I have a 4" and 4" allowance over chest and waist respectively. This is a very slim fit already. I originally had 4" and 6", which was still quite slim; However, I wanted something very fit and thus tried trimming my last shirts measurements, which results I am very happy with.

I believe you have to decide for yourself what kind of aesthetic you are looking for. IMO with an athletic built body, a very slim fit with minimal allowance for chest and waist (4" perhaps even 3" both measurements) is very flattering. But of course, its a personal choice once again

I have a 35" chest and 30" waist, most of my bespoke shirts are very slim fit. There's only 1 inch allowance for both my chest and waist, again, I'm only 5ft7 so I cant wear anything less slim.

Not so much a rule of thumb, per se. Move around while trying the shirt on. Make sure that when you sit down (or whatever else) that the shirt is not so slim that it is pulling at the buttons. not comfortable or attractive.

Cheers,

I'm nearly the same specs as the OP, and for me a 40" chest shirt and 18" around the waist/hips seems to fit just right where it's very slim yet comfortable and the shirt doesnt bulge out when tucked in.

An 18" waist? Did you have your lowest ribs removed?

So, an 80" chest (measured around) and a 36" waist?

Sorry. I'll stop now.
