How often do you wear cotton trousers before they get a clean?

when it smells or after 3 to 5 wears depending on how long I wore it and how hot the day was.

Until they start to look in the least grubby--usually 2-3 days.

why is it that cotton trousers that are machine washable, have a higher frequency in washes than a wool trouser (as part of a suit let say) that is dry cleaned?

is there some characteristic that makes wool trousers less likely to get soiled in same time frame
or
is it the cost and hassle of dry cleaning that makes people more careful wearing wool trousers, or bear with wearing them more towards a noticeable smell than with a cotton trouser?

Intriguing question: why treat them differently? Because they wrinkle? Because it's cheaper than a dry-clean, so why not wash them more often? Are they not affected by frequent cleaning the same way wool trousers are?

I'd say I wear mine at least 3 times between dry cleans (hate ironing, don't trust my skills), though rarely more than once a week.

Wool has a natural barrier against water, dirt, grease, and other nastiness. It's called Lanolin, and is very handy stuff. Lots of the lanolin is generally removed from the wool during processing, but there's generally enough left to help keep the wool protected without making it feel greasy.

At least, that's what I've read. I could be wrong, and have been on a few things in the last month.

Cotton jeans... when they fail the smell test or look dirty, so way too infrequently.

Other cotton trousers get washed fairly frequently but I have no fixed cycle. Because they get worn in random rotation I can't tell how often I've worn each pair before they a wash but I would guess they get washed about the same as the woolens get dry cleaned. Basically once they start to look even a little bit stained they get washed. I used to wash them after only 2 wears but then I found the fabric would fade so much they became unwearable after only 12 months.

Surely a fixed cycle is rather stupid? They (as with any other garment) should be washed or dry cleaned as maybe when dirty - that being a very broad term which is not easily defined.

For example were you to spill something on said trousers you would hardly not clean them simply because the cycle said they were not due....
