Basically, I'm wondering how much people would pay, at the absolute max, and assuming your current level of income, for a given item of clothing. Just curious. I hope no one finds the question crass, I'm just curious how people value their various items. Suit: $750 Odd Jacket: $300 Dress Shirt: $100 edit[can't believe I forgot this!!] Overcoat: $600 Jeans: $175 Shoes: $500 Belt: $75 Watch: $750 Individual Accessory(pocket square, tie, cufflinks, socks, etc., jewelry, ): $100 Style: Priceless. I'm a grad student and enjoy hunting for good deals. Even when I have money, I wouldn't pay more for what I listed above.

    Very interesting question.

    Suit: $3,250
    Odd Jacket: $2000
    Dress Shirt: $300
    Jeans: $300
    Shoes: $900
    Belt: $275
    Watch: $4,000
    Pocket Square: $120
    Tie: $200
    Cufflinks: $1000
    Socks: $30

A good friend of mine argues that a watch is the best thing to invest in, but I really disagree with that. A good suit is by far the best choice, with shoes coming in second.... That being said, I think the incremental value between a $2000 MTM suit and a $3000 bespoke suit is huge, whereas the incremental value between an $900 pair of Edward Greens and a $2000 pair of something else is pretty small.

    Jacket:2750
    PAnt:400
    Shirt:450
    Shoes:1000
    Overcoat:2000
    jeans:-
    watch:-
Misc: <100 (Get most of this stuff online at discount)

These are just my maxes, not what i spend on every item. I've made a 2 bespoke/yr rule, which shirts are exempt from. I try to get as much online as i can because it's just so much cheaper, but the options are limited, so bespoke fills in the blanks. For shirts though, bespoke is the only option.

Axel Foley: Inspector T, how you doin'? Inspector Todd: Where the fuck you been, Foley? And what the fuck is this? Axel Foley: It's a blue slip. Inspector Todd: What the hell do you need a thousand dollars for? Axel Foley: Just a little flash money. Inspector Todd: Flash money. Now let's see here - $2,000 for a suit, $200 for a tie, a requisition order for a Ferrari. I'm tired of seein' these blue slips, when the hell am I gonna see some arrest slips? Axel Foley: Look, inspector if there was a problem, I think... Inspector Todd: Don't think, Axel, makes my dick itch. Fact of the matter is, I'm pouring money down a bottomless hole. And my ass is on the line. I ok'd all this shit!

JakeJake has the right idea. The more you spend, the more you worry about ruining the article of clothing. How many posts have there been of guys trying to fix their Aldens or Lobbs? Don't let the clothes own you.

A watch is a piece of jewelry. Sky is the limit on that.

I can see your point if you need to wear a bib to eat or work in a dirty environment, but aside from my white pants, I don't worry too much. Of course I take care of my things, but I'd hardly say that they regulate my life in any fashion. I just had a borrelli dry cleaned for the very first time last week and I've owned it a year.

    Two thoughts hit me immediately:

1.) My recent foray into thrifting has drastically cut what I want to pay. Since I have found fantastic designer stuff for less than $50, I spend a lot less time lusting at stores, and a lot more time prowling the shops.

2.) Like many, I'm on a serious budget right now. Ask me again when I'm working after my MBA:

    Suit: $400/$500
Odd Jacket: $75 (to have a bespoke jacket made from MY fabric: $250)
    Overcoat: $150
    Dress Shirt: $70
    Jeans: $30
    Shoes: $170
    Belt: $25
    Watch: $150
    Pocket square: $10
    Tie: $40
    Cufflinks: $25
    Socks: $8

    Odd Jacket: $50 (unlikely though)
    Overcoat: $110
    Dress Shirt: $70
Jeans: $200 (SDA piggy addiction is setting in but I doubt I will buy anymore denim for quite some time)
    Shoes: $300
    Belt: $50
    Watch: $200
    Pocket square: $25
    Tie: $70
    Cufflinks: $50
    Socks: $12

    Odd jacket: $50 (I prefer to thrift/eBay)
    Overcoat: $50 (I prefer to thrift/ebay)
Dress Shirt: $75 (I usually buy new, but have purchased thrift)
    Shoes: $200 (I prefer to buy new/old-stock)

Tie: $60 (though most of my workhorse ties are lightly used from eBay and cost $10)
Cufflinks: $33 (lightly used Brooks Brothers sterling knots)
Socks: $12 (though I haven't bought a pair of socks more than $3 yet)
