Is it possible for a tailor to take a jacket down a size? I measure almost exactly 36", but 38's are a lot more plentiful. I'm guessing it's probably not a good idea, but I figured I'd ask you guys anyway.

Definitely. I've had it done many times. I think the trickiest part is reducing the width of the shoulders, if you'd have to have that done too. Otherwise, it's a matter of taking in the jacket at its existing seams.

I don't see why not, as long as it's a good tailor.

buy according to your chest size. a tailor can alter the shoulder width and the waist, but he/she can't do much around the chest, and you really don't want to mess with the length.

if your chest measures 36" then you need a jacket with a chest measurement of 38-39". you're only going to find this from a size 36.
