How much can a suit coat be let out?

Last year I purchased a suit from Benetton (long story, I had to purchase that suit for... again long story) anyways- Since then I've put on maybe 10-15lbs. I went to try it on the other day and it was really snug and looked awkward when buttoned. I was wondering if I brought it to a tailor how much they could let it out... or should I just buy a new suit. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
