How many miles in a pair of running shoes?

I searched but didn't see this question asked before.

I am wondering how often folks generally replace their running shoes - how many miles do you get out of them?

I've been averaging about 800+ miles on mine before replacing them (that's just under a year for me) but I was talking to our secretary and she mentioned that her son, a competitive distance runner who has done time with the Hansons running team replaces his about every other month. After looking around at some running themed message boards, it seems like my 800+ miles for a pair is pretty extreme.

I have heard 500 miles. If I were as serious as your secretary's son, I might switch more often.

Depends on your weight, and whether you pronate or supinate heavily, wide and flat feet tend to wear out shoes faster.

500 miles, modern shoes? Seems a bit low.

I read somewhere running injuries have increased with the modern shoe design because it messes with strike angles, etc. Can't find it but it was an interesting read.

For me I used my last ones for about 300+. Should probably go up a notch in price if you can do 800+...
