9.0 tonight in 57:22. Started off somewhat easy, then started to feel good and it kinda turned into a progression run. miles splits were 6:52, 6:36, 6:33, 6:38, 6:31, 6:19, 6:05, 5:59, and 5:49.

Do you know your mile splits because you know the route well, you're running on a track, or you have a GPS device? If it's a GPS device, which one? Also, how would you rate your level of fitness? I just got into running at age 22 and your times are pretty much my goal.

I use a garmin forerunner 205 (its one of the older, bulkier models compared to what they have now) and i have it set to auto-split at every mile. I highly recommend getting a gps if you can.

I guess id consider myself pretty fit... i realize im faster than the average runner anyway (but i dont really think of myself as all that fast considering the times pro and even college runners run).
I also started running at the age of 22, as a way to stay active because i wasnt regularly playing other sports anymore. I started out just using a treadmill at the Y and took to it rather quickly, then transitioned to only running outside and really got hooked on running. Now i wish i would have ran when i was younger, because i enjoy it more and am better at it than i would have expected.

The few ppl I have asked said that the earlier Garmins have a better interface than the 405. Thinking about the upgrade - using a ghetto stop watch and remembering mile markers gets obnoxious. Splits like those are pretty quick for the average recreational runner Jwied. Whats your next race?

You can get the older garmins for pretty cheap now, $125 or under for the forerunner205, and imo theres nothing wrong with it compared to the newer ones (though ive never personally used a 405). I think youd really like it if you got one.

I dont really have any upcoming race planned for sure right now. I'll probably run a 10 mile race the saturday after Thanksgiving, ive run it 4 of the last 5 years. Its 5 miles out and back on one road, completely flat and straight, no turns. Kinda boring, but good for running fast if the weather is alright. A few years ago i ran it in 57:02.. not expecting to be that fast if i run it this year.

It wouldnt surprise me, the 405 looks... cool but less useful.

I experienced quite serious IT band pain a while back up to the point that I couldn't finish my run, had pain walking for two days, and took a week off after that. I'll try some stretches for it and am starting again slowly. Problem is I've got my first half marathon in less than two weeks from now and I'm not sure if I'll make that. Maybe I'll change my enrollment to the 8K they have.

I stretched my IT band aggressively over the course of a week and was good to run by Friday. That said, I really went after it, particularly at the hip insertion, and I could notice increased flexibility each day.

I may have posted about the stretch before, but basically you stand in a doorway with one foot on one side, and push your hip towards the other side.

This morning, 6 miles in 45 minutes. Temperature was perfect: 45 degrees. Hoping to run the Detroit (Half) Marathon in a few weeks.
