How many miles did you run today?

I swam maybe 400 meters this morning at Kua Bay, but more fun, I got to witness history at the Ultraman World Championships, as Jen Annett of Canada became the first woman to win the race outright, breaking the women’s course record in the process. Her overall time was 23:04:56 (that’s for a 10k swim, 260+ miles on the bike, and 52.4 mile run).

Got in a gym session and run after taking most of last week off with travel and the frigid temps in Ohio I was not expecting.

1.2 mile swim this morning from the pier in Kailua Kona with a couple of friends. That’s half of the Ironman swim course. We’re taking the red eye back to Denver tonight.

1500 meters swimming at the Y. Coincidentally, I ran into the previous women’s Ultraman record holder at the pool.

I really need to get more swimming in.

I’ve been doing a lot of spinning and running at the gym lately but decided to head out to my favorite local park this morning for some fresh air.

We had just trace amounts of snow at our house so I was surprised when I got to the park, only about 20 minutes north of us, and there were 4” of snow on the ground. As I got closer and closer to the park I was starting to get worried that my shoes wouldn’t cut it - it didn’t occur to me to bring my Goretex winter running shoes or the old pair of ASICS that I’ve put some screw spikes into. Oh well… I wasn’t turning back.

Thankfully, the snow was very dry and powdery and the only slick spots were on a couple of short, steep downhill segments.

The snow also wasn’t nearly as thick in the wooded areas but there was a couple spots on a high ridge on one side of the lake where it had drifted up to my knees. It was fun to be the first person to plow through those drifts in the morning.

Gym training has been going well. Was able to easily move 170 kg on my backsquat and did a pretty easy 145kg clean pull recently for reps. I haven't gone anywhere near these weights in the past year due to various injuries. Still working my way up to 185-190ish kg squat and hopefully 165-175kg clean pull before I start olympic weightlifting again.

I was also able to easily do a 125kg front squat without training my front squat in over 9 months so that's good.

If you learned to lift in lbs it might sound mildly less underwhelming.

Squatted 180kg last night but was slow and grinding. Used to be able to move 180kg pretty easy but at least I was able to squat it. I wanted to go for 185 or 190 but given how difficult 180 was, I decided to call it there. Also cleaned pull 151.5kg. First time I've been that close to my 1 rep max in about a year for either lift.

I've been taking it easy lately. Some back pain that lead to other aches in my back because of bad posture so I have been focusing on posture because I am not young anymore where you could get away with these things. Instead of weights and running just a lot of walking.

Finished up my 10 week training block to get back in shape. Able to strict press 80.5kg (PB is 84kg) and clean pull 171kg (PB is 175kg). Both lifts were slow and I had to grind through. When I hit my PB's both weights moved easy so not quite at my peak strength but at least I'm back near my normal baseline.

Slow thread lately. Got in a gym session yesterday and while finishing up my machine fly's, I am watching a woman who is a regular do bench press. She looked around before starting which made me think she needed a spot but didn't ask anyone. Well I watch her go down for rep 1 and the bar did not move back up...no one in this gym does pause reps so I jump up and run over to help lift the bar off of her. Most of the people at my gym are of retirement age so no one was going to help her.

Since the office is closed this week, I will get in my daily workouts. Running is going well, just cold.

I haven't been on a bike in more than a month. Between work, travel, weekend busyness, and sickness, it just hasn't happened. I am almost down to my all-time Strava fitness low:

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
