Clayton Young will stay with Connor Mantz for as long as he can today in Paris. If the x factors (Mt Bastille or the August sun) wreck enough havoc, they may well pull one or another of their countrymen towards a podium in the Men's marathon of this Olympiad.

Young is in his thirties, with kids and wife and Mantz a nimble postgraduate in all but name. They, inexplicably, stand a better chance in the men's field than the US women do in theirs. In four hours we'll have the result.

I did about an hour of kettlebell work while catching up on whitewater kayaking at the Olympics. The kayak cross is chaotic fun…

In NYC for the weekend -- 13.5 miles up to Central Park and around the loop. Ducked around the reservoir my second time around, which brought back great memories of when I was living in NY (now 20+ years ago). I usually run alone in Ann Arbor, so running here with so many people around was a lot of fun and brought out some of my competitive streak. For the most part I was sticking to my easy run pace so very relaxed -- reached the bottom of the Harlem Hill when I sensed a couple of runners coming up on me. Could tell from their breathing that they were pushing their pace and they settled behind me for the next 200 meters or so. I was waiting for them to pass me but they didn't, so I just decided to accelerate up the hill and see whether they could hold on. They didn't -- but I eased back down and let them catch up to me and pass me on the downhill.

15.1 miles this morning with an overall pace of 8:43/mile. My first mile (about 10 minutes after rolling out of bed) was 10:20, mile 2 was 9:32, and mile 3 was 9:04 and I kept bringing it down from there (best was mile 15 at 8:14). This was my longest run in probably about a year and I felt like I had quite a bit left in the tank at the end, so that was a good sign.

It was also about 60º with absolutely no humidity when I kicked off. It was perfect running weather.

Similar to MP, we had a break in the humidity. Yesterday was busy in the afternoon so I had to run early so a lot more people out. Did my stand 7.3 miles with 4x4 intervals which were easier with the weather.

12.5 miles Sunday and then off to take my oldest to horse camp for the next 8 days. We miss her but she's probably not even thinking about us! 🤣

How about that women's marathon at the Olympics? Sifan Hassan is amazing - 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m, marathon. I want to see her run some hurdles and sprints in 2028 and maybe throw the shot put or take up judo or rock climbing!

Damn that's impressive to run all those events and still win gold in the marathon.

Paris did something really cool for recreational marathon runners. They let everyone run the marathon course during the Olympics and not just the athletes.
