How many miles did you run today?

Was windy today but I rode strongly. I don't pay a lot of attention to Strava segments but I do have a couple that I like to work on. My favorite segment went from a PR of 10:50 to today at 6:22. Not upset with that progress.

Had another blah week last week, so it was my first run in December today. Like Dusty I tend to prefer the cold and it was -3ºC today (or 26.5ºF)* which is still in my favoured range. I did my 13.2km (8 1/4 mile) out and back run mid-afternoon (because it's getting too dark to run either in the morning or the evening now). I was supposed to be doing an easy pace of 5:15/km (8:27/mile), but as with most of the runs of this distance I've done recently, I was a bit faster: 5:04/km (8:10/mile).

*Now I've got to convert temperatures as well as distances and paces. Can you guys hurry up and enter the twenty-first century? ;)

So, I did the math, I am at 1,261 miles so far this year.

I should have hit 2800km (c.1740 miles) this year, but what with one thing and another, I'm only going to hit 1875km (c.1165miles). Still, it's a lot more than last year (not much more than 1000km / 600 miles), and I will set more realistic targets next year, but that will be further still.

Ya, injuries really set me back. Otherwise I would likely be within a stones throw of the 1,500.

Quick 5k lunch loop today. Tried for fast and ended up moderately not slow, 7:35 pace.

I’m at 973 miles currently so I’ll have no problem breaking 1K this year. As far as I know whatever I end up with will be the most miles I’ve ever logged (at least since being on Strava and tracking YTD, most miles before this year was 1,001 in 2017).

8.4 miles this morning. The temp was about 25º when I stepped off. I think we're done with mornings above freezing for a while. I enjoy running in the cold but my times generally get considerably slower as the temps drop. However, I always seem to have more stamina with winter running and feel like if I had more time I could run for hours non-stop. One of the things I always enjoyed about running in super cold weather was starting from my gym and finishing up and going right into the steam room to thaw out. I have no desire to get back into our gym this winter and even if I did, I believe the steam room is closed anyway.

Re: mileage - I'm currently at 2,186 miles for the year and should finish just above 2,300 total. This is my first year with more than 2,000 miles run but I've gotten pretty close to it before. And even with all the increased miles, I feel like I've been running smarter: I've been paying a lot more attention to my pace and been deliberate and thoughtful when setting short-term goals. I've also managed to shave considerable amounts of time off of my 5k, 10k, and half marathon times and even though I've slowed down in setting new PRs, my times are consistently faster than where they were at the start of the year. I've also lost close to 40 pounds since the start of the year!

Currently at 1,808 miles. If I didn't drop my mileage down I would have hit 2K this year which was the original goal. I may be able to hit 1,900. If I am close going into the last 2 weeks I'll pick it up just because.

Feeling great with the reduced mileage with increased strength work. While I doubt I will buy a bunch of free weights, I have been eyeing a pull-up bar and have debated a TRX system. Trying not to spend money with my job status in limbo but once I get that sorted, I will look into buying a couple of things we have planned.

In terms of PB improvements this year, while I am still confident I can continue to make absolute time improvements into my 50s, I am more interested in the age grade than the time these days:

Mile
2019. Time: 05:47 / age grade: 71:61%
2020. Time: 05:41 / age grade: 73:41%
All time. Time: 05:26 / 73.34% (2014) Age grade: 05:41 / 73:41% (2020)

5k
2019. Time: 20:37 / age grade: 69.93% (my only timed 5k of 2019 but, a couple of days after a marathon!)
2020. Time: 19:57 / age grade: 72.85%
All time. Time: 18:37 / 72.25% (2013) Age grade: 19:57 / 72.85% (2020)

8k
2019. Time: 35:54 / age grade: 65.09% (just as I was beginning to start really training again)
2020. Time: 31:51 / age grade: 73:94%
All time. Time: 31:24 / 71.55% (2014) Age grade: 31:51 / 73:94% (2020)

10k
2019. Time: 46:37 / age grade: 62.85% (also just as I was beginning to start really training again)
2020. Didn't complete a timed 10k this year.
All time. Time: 39:42 / 69.31% (2012) Age grade: 40:36 / 71:03% (2014)

Half
2019. No road half in 2019; I did do a trail half in 1:49:17, but you can't really compare them.
2020. Time: 1:37:30 / age grade: 65.13% (I was supposed to do another timed half but that was when I was injured).
All time. Time: 1:30:54 / 68.95% (2014) Age grade: same

Conclusion: I need to work on distance performance in 2021. I seem to get faster at shorter distances regardless of how I train, so long as I do something, but I need to improve my distance training.

4 miles this morning after dropping my daughter off at school. underdressed and was cold the entire time, mostly my legs / knees which felt stiff from the wind. gotta start wearing tights when we get below 30F. ran on feel since my watch was covered (i like doing this in the winter, especially since it's not my favorite running weather and i can make myself focus other things, like how enjoyable an empty the waterfront is, etc.). 8:10 pace.
