How many miles did you RIDE today?

    How about the slope of the terrain ridden? North Georgia has a lot of challenging rolling hills... Rode 5.5 miles today commuting. Lungs are getting better (slower to get winded, but still slow coming back down). There's a moderate yet long hill halfway there that absolutely destroys my legs and leaves me worthless the rest of the trip.
    You'd really have to ask other cyclists and compare route times. I live in western IL, which is predominantly flat with short, steep hills carved by the Mississippi ages ago. Depending on my route, I can average between 19 (steep 20% hills that wind me) to 23 (almost completely flat). Poor chip seal or road conditions can also make a difference in the average. Overall, average speed is a terrible way to judge your riding abilities. Also, the best way to increase your climbing abilities on that hill is to find a steeper, longer hill and ride it a lot. Then that hill will seem like nothing. So far today: 17 miles on my Bianchi (road bike) and 8 miles of college commuting (fixed gear) planned, probably a ride this afternoon as well.

    Did my 40km commute again today. Much quicker, despite steady rain.

    Only a couple of hills: one about 3% and one 5%, each about 500m. Melbourne is pretty flat really; you have to go out of town to do serious climbing.

    Completely agree with your first statement. One of the guys i ride with can sit there a push a big gear for awhile on the flat and hold 23mph. as soon as he hits any type of hill he drops down well below 15mph. also average mph is hard to go by when you are riding through town, where you can't be in a zone and pedaling your brains out. stopping at traffic lights and slowing for stop signs also make a diffference


    Have a day where yuo go and ride nothing but that hill, get a good solid warm up in and do a bunch of hill repeats. Try to climb the hill 4 or 5 times. or until yuo absolutely can't anymore. Work on having a game plan for hills. Try to have a certain speed or gear you can consistently hold or certain ponts on the hill where you downshift and crank or up a gear and get out of the saddle.

    I did over 18 miles on relatively hilly terrain (Lancaster City and County if anyone has every been in the area [doubt it]). No clue of average by I hit 35+ on the bigger hills.

    Yesterday- 14 miles doing errands, 20 on an actual ride.
    Today- a 30-mile solo ride after the rain stopped, then another 16 miles with a slower rider right before sunset. Fall is one of my favorite riding seasons for the rush of trying to beat the falling sun while the temperature drops.

    I ride really hilly terrain and av. about 17 mph on most days (lots of long climbs). I've hit 40 mph on downhills before; I just can not imagine if I ever crashed. [​IMG] Kentucky is so beautiful though, honestly wouldn't want to live anywhere else (at least for right now).

    55 miles. San Gabriel Valley ride. Average 23mph (generally in big peloton -150+ - so plenty of shelter) - mostly flat with some hills at the end for chaff from wheat sorting. super hot today in LA

    Merida MTB Marathon, Denmark. 103KM of forest roads and singletrack, no major hills, (surprise it's Denmark after all), 4 hours 48. Busted now but hungry for more

    Did this route again, but this time with a 20mph wind from the south. I forgot how much I hate headwinds, especially on the way back in to town. Wednesday- 25 miles of commuting and 4 people cut me off. What is it with fall temperatures and people driving like jerks all of the sudden? I've only been cut off 3 times all spring/summer and now I've equaled that in a day.

    Sounds like me. I'm working on it by making my rides more intense rather than cruising. Instead of shifting down to the bottom gear when I get to a long hill, I limit myself to 2nd-bottom and see how I go. I've surprised myself - got up both of the bad hills on my commute without downshifting. So I will do it again in one higher gear, etc.

    I am also, on the advice of my trainer, taking a long steady climb on the morning ride in the highest gear I can manage.

    So far working well -shaved 10 minutes off my commute time.

    30, which is the farthest I've gone since getting my road bike so i'm pretty happy about it. Half the ride was through a headwind, which was....fun. I kinda wish I had some hills around but Florida is completely flat [​IMG].

    If your legs are strong enough to handle it, take hills in a middle gear in the rear and smallest gear in your front chainring. You'll be at a lower RPM but you will ride the hill at a faster pace. I'd rather exert a little more effort for a shorter amount of time than struggle up a hill at a really slow pace with light pedal pressure.
