Gentlemen,

I have one vest I will have altered to put on buttons on it. ( it came without buttons or buttonholes)

I have seen many debates about how many buttons are ok on a jacket or sleeve.

How about a vest/waistcoat. which is more or less formal ?

Opinions appreciated

That really depends on how the waistcoat is cut.

Personally I like them cut with a high gorge and no lapel. The waistcoat's top button will be around where the second button of the shirt (not counting collar buttons) is. In that case, I would go for 6 buttons, but never button the lowest one.

Keep in mind that there are SB and DB waistcoats, each with different numbers of buttons and button arrangements.
