I can picture the OP going all Boondock Saints on all the local sex offenders, except they'd all be overweight late middle aged men, so he'd be the least badass Boondock Saint ever.

I understand they are people and need a place to live just like everyone else. What I'm upset about is that this information isn't more widespread. I didn't know about this site or even concider looking up this kind of info until a friend sent me this site.

Most people these days are already about as paranoid as you can practically be about stuff like this.

You got remember that it probably doesn't matter how nice your neighborhood is, sex offenders don't discriminate by wealth. Consequently, there were none in my subdivision, but more than enough in the surrounding areas. The scariest part about all this, is that there are probably still some that have yet to be reported.

That's why I asked. I guess I was surprised because I thought most people knew that such information is available. But the degree of awareness may vary by community, and I may be particularly tuned in to such things as the parent of a young child (don't know if you're a parent or not).

I know... and I would blame the "To catch a predator" show for that. They bring those people in to interview them, but like 95% of them are released. They actually caught one guy twice.

I'm no expert, but I'd guess that you see higher concentrations in less expensive neighborhoods, as convicted criminals are, on average, presumably going to be less financially well-off and more itinerant than the general population.

I would say that statistically, significantly more sex offenders probably live in lower-income neighborhoods because it's hard to get as high paying a job when you're a convicted criminal.

EDIT: Goddammit lawyerdad

also you have to factor in all the years they spent out of the workforce. They start at the bottom of the ladder wherever they work, unless its a license-plate factory.

Good point. I didn't take that into account.

No, I'm not a parent, but when thinking about this issue I get concerned about people like my little sister (14). Your right, as a young adult this kind of thing is not always on my mind, which is why I was so shocked to see the results (my ignorance was assuming there wouldn't be so many sex offenders). I realize that their is not much you can do besides knowing these people are out their and educatiing others of ways to keep kids safer.

I put in my address and got 1160 offenders. Not a surprise as we get a new notification of a sex offender every couple weeks. Oh, off-campus student housing.

To be fair, once I zoom in to include solely student-housing, I get 335 offenders. Most of them seem concentrated in certain appartment buildings.
