how long will you keep a suit for?

For example, let's say you just spent $7k on a Kiton OTR suit. How long do you expect to wear that piece for before 1. the look is outdated, or 2. you just grow tired of it.
Oh, and one last question; what's the oldest suit in your wardrobe? (that still gets worn)

I say as long as the suit doesn't look dated and fits properly, carry on for as long as you like

I would say indefinitely. Even if it looks dated the style will probably come back. Besides, isn't the whole point of spending more on high quality suits that they will last for a long time. I often read stories of men keeping very high quality suits over 20 years.

Depending on the quality and price I paid for the suit I have a few in my closet that I have had for a few years now. Unless it is an odd style that is out or is damaged i will try to hang onto it if it's one I really like or paid good money for other wise i will just get a new one to replce it.

Until

1. I can no longer fit it
2. I no longer like it
3. It has become damaged

Other than that, it stays. I could care less what's still in, if I like it, I'll find an occasion to wear it.

My father had some bespoke suits made by "off-Savile Row" tailors in the 1950s and 1960s, and he wore them (not every day, admittedly, but probably a few times a month) for 40 years, until he died. He was even buried in one. They were pretty conservative - navy, charcoal and a mid-gray, in a single-breasted, two-button cut with double vents.

Of course, it helps if you stay the same weight/build throughout your life. I don't think that my father's weight varied more than about five pounds for the two decades that I knew him!

I am wearing a 10 year old suit today, I don't have a suit that is less than 7 years old.

Assuming your not buying garments styled to an extreme of the moment, you should be able to wear it for as long as it fits. What looks dated to a younger generation will still look good to you and your peers, and you won't be all that interested in their opinion anyway.

super tips gents...just trying to justify to myself why I should buy quality over quantity. I generally think styles change, but perhaps basic suits will always stay classic.

I will retain any suit:

While it still fits
remains undamaged
I like it.

That could be anything up to ten or more years - even those that don;t fit can remain as I do manage to lose weight occasionally.

As they all all bespoken garments from the 'Row or Chan/Yao in Hong Kong the chances of not liking it are slim given that they are all 'standard' patterns - the days of buying high fashion left me many years ago when I was young.
