How long should a dress shirt be when untucked?

Assuming you are wearing a dress shirt untucked... how long should it be in inches below the waist? Of course its suppose to be tucked in but if not untucked... how many inches? I heard 7' was good. The reason why i ask this is because i wore a dress shirt from Banana Republic and i thought it was way too big because it was too long below my waist. The fitting was fine but it was just so long from top to bottom. Sleeves were great as well. I want to know how many inches below my waist area so I can know that the size is "right" for me.

You could just state all your questions in one thread or use the "ask a question" thread.

Your dress shirt should be long enough so that when you go about your everyday routines, the shirt does not come untuck.

Depends on how you hang. Obviously with only 7" you'd need to be pretty undersized.

7 to 8" is about right. In my case I allow about mid to upper of my joint.
In a regular shirt, I generally wear a 15 1/2 or med.. To button the collar though,I need a 16.
Though at 5-6 this makes the shirt too long, too much material to stuff around with, when I go to the can. So I just automaticly take a new dress shirt to my local tailor to get them shortened, so I don't have a yard of fabric to mess around with when I need to wip out and stuff back in my johnson.

If untucked the shirt should be just long enough to cover the waistband of your trousers.

7" sounds likes the bottom of the shirt is gonna be hanging down around your crotch somewhere. This is what you want if you're tucking but is way too long for untucked...

Go take a look at your wife, girlfriend, or sister wearing an untucked blouse. If the length looks good to you. then that is what you want. Adjust length as needed. if it looks too long or too short. An untucked men's shirt takes its inspiration from an untucked women's blouse.

It's age specific but I hate the untucked look. I did however use to wear my shirts untucked when I was in my early to mid 20s. I had to get most shirts altered so I didn't look like a doofus. To me somewhere midway between my zipper of fly on my pants.
