How long does your underwear last?

Serious question. I'm used to keeping my clothes for years and years and I hate throwing away stuff. But that's definitely not the case with underwear. Especially when it comes to socks, I've even tried some expensive stuff like Malo cashmere socks. Briefs and trunks last a few months, so do socks that tend to be worn in a matter of weeks.

2-3 months is about right. That's why I get whatever fits me in large quantities. There is no way around it...

Socks and underwear in weeks/months? How is that even possible?

OK, let me explain regarding socks: within weeks, they show signs of wear, they lose elasticity, etc.

I use to have that but don’t have that issue anymore since I’ve purchased higher quality socks (Carlo Lanza, bresciani) and have stopped drying them in the dryer.

Do you wear tight clothing? Tight underwear tend to last way less than loose ones. Regarding socks, 2 of my dress shoes are a bit rough with my socks and I am conscious wearing those shoes now.

In other news, high end stuff does not necessarily last longer: A wool blend/cotton blend socks will last longer than cashmere ones.

Ex Officio boxer briefs. Last me 2-3 years (more maybe) per pair.

Depends on what you consider to be an acceptable shape.

I OCD on socks a bit, as I come from the culture where shoes are not worn in the house. The rule is simple: be prepared for an impromptu invitation to someone's house where you have to take shoes off. Therefore, socks, shoes, etc, have to be in the top shape. Once socks start showing signs of fraying, they're out.

Over the years, I've come to apply the same rules to underwear. Don't know whether it makes sense, but it works for me. I am also particular about the stuff looks in the closet and in the dressers. Anything unslightly must find a new home in the garbage can.

I think that socks are ultimately expandable, there's no way around it. grooming your feet will probably help. I also wash mine by hand and let them dry in a natural way.

I have bought low quality socks in the past which formed holes within weeks, yet others have lasted for years. As the sock is the only variable in this equation, it seems that sock quality is highly variable so try to find a better brand of socks. Low quality socks are actually more expensive in the long run, not to mention environmentally unfriendly, time-wasting, etc.
