How long do you resist suit trends...if at all?

Hi,

First post and it may have been discussed before but I'll plunge on anyway.
I was wondering how many members are swayed by changes in suit styles, if it becomes apparent they are going to be around for a while and are not just transient.
I was thinking about this in view of the increasing popularity of high-stance two-button slim fit suits after years of the ubiquitous three-button.
How long do you hold out for - or do you ignore gradual changes and remain faithful to what you like.
For example, was there a period when three-buttons simply had to dominate your wardrobe after two-buttons lost favor in the early to mid nineties - and are you now thinking those might need to be phased out and be replaced by the new sillhouette.
Please tell me all my three-button (all rolled to 2.5) MTM Corneliani suits and odd jackets are not going to be obsolete soon.

Thanks for any interest in advance

if you wear traditional suits with traditional lapels and traditional buttoning points, you don't have to worry about trends.

You'll find that most people here never cared about those 'trends' in the first place.

I think the only trend I like which has come back around many times is narrower lapels and ties from the late 1950s/early 1960s. Of course, I find nothing wrong with normal width at all, as it's actually preferable for my build anyways. I can't stand the super wide lapels from the 1970s though.

Three-buttons tend to be particularly timeless because they're largely immune to the trends in button stance that date many two-buttons. (There was a period when exceptionally high-buttoning threes were popular, but that was the exception rather than the rule.)

With new purchases I try to nudge the details forward a bit, just to keep things fresh. I avoid going too deep into any one particular style or set of details. Invariably what I favored ten years ago differs somewhat from what I like today.

Will higher gorges ever go out, do you think?

They probably didn't fret via BBS, though. Perhaps they Telneted into a MUSH/MUCK/MUD and let their concerns play out in that arena.

I've found that if you're really serious about being stylish, you don't want to be the guy in the trendy suit.

Yes... too extreme of anything eventually goes out.

You mean like Attolini & Borrelli do? I don't think so. To me, it's what looks the best. When I put on older suits with somewhat lower gorges they don't look right. I'll never go back.

I've always liked a very specific cut to my suits and have been wearing such for the past 12 years when I bought myself my first suit, and therefore will sometimes be "in" and then "out" but it's what I always wear and look for. Currently, I happen to be "in", but I'm sure within a couple years I'll be back "out".

If you want to get an idea of what will last, look at old pictures and try to see what has lasted.

I grew up looking at old advertisements and picking through racks of vintage clothing.

Nothing lasts exactly, but some things last for a very long time. For an adult man, if you can wear an item for 20 or 30 years, it's like a lifetime. Most suits will physically wear out in a decade of normal wear, depending on how you wear your suit, how and how often you dry clean it (in general: avoid!), and how you store it, but tweeds can literally last a lifetime.

Three rolling to two is an extremely durable style, assuming the lapels are decently shaped and proportioned.
