How "high" should the collar sit on a man's dress shirt?

Hi, all.

I read the below on Permanent Style regarding shirt collars (and collar heights):

The height at the front, however, depends far more on how high the collar sits on the body of the shirt, than it does on the height of the collar itself.

I am in complete agreement about this, but how do tailors know "how high" to place the collar? In my case, if you look at me on profile view, my collar very obviously slopes down from back to front. I've asked them to increase the collar height a bit, but now I am thinking that it hasn't solved the underlying problem. Should I just tell my tailor to place the collar higher...or at least place it higher at the front of the shirt?

Thank you.

I can only say that it looks good to me. Of course, if your preference is a higher collar on the front, it's certainly feasible.

I don’t understand what you think the problem is. “my collar very obviously slopes down from back to front” — do you think the collar should not slope from back to front? I don’t think I’ve seen a shirt collar that is remotely close to being horizontal from back to front.
If you just want a collar that goes up higher on your neck, that is up to you. I don’t think there’s a standard for this.

I know I'm being nitpicky, but I feel the shape of the collar is "off" in certain ways when I compare it to photos elsewhere, such as this buttoned-up one in particular from Isaia. Does this one not look better? (Only if you agree...are there any "easy" changes I could make to mine to achiever a more similar look? I would imagine there is a less of a slope downward from back of collar to front, but perhaps I am mistaken.)

Thank you.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
