How good are morning of December 26 sales?

(CORRECTION: DECEMBER 26)

This is a question only an SF'er could ask, but humor me.

I'll be on an extended stay in Boston this Christmas, and want to spend Christmas Day with relatives. I am thinking of going either to Ohio or to New York.

There are many pros and cons, but the relevant question here is: How good are New York City sales on the morning of December 26? Are they especially better than other days, such as the scattered sales throughout the fall? Are there big online sales on December 26 as well?

On December 25th, more commonly known as Christmas, nearly all stores are closed.

I don't think the 12/26 sales are particularly great. You generally have to wait until the Jan/Feb sales before stores really start trying to move their unsold end of year inventories.

the exception being saks, who does a final reduction markdown for the morning of the 26th; prices are back to regular sale prices on the 27th, and don't get good again until January.

I used to think that the sales on the 26th were excellent, but since discovering the various clothing fora, I take a much more deliberate approach to shopping. I have a list of things that I want and keep my eye on ebay/stp/sales forums/etc to fill my orders.

In any case, my experience has been like the others'...some stores are pretty good, while other stores hold out until January. Hit and miss, I guess.

What's the forum policy on vague, one-word posts again?

Dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The precedents are unclear. The long and short of the matter is that you can get some good deals on the 26th, (especially good if you are shopping for a particular item, rather than just bargain hunting), but that most of the sales actually start in January, and go on into February.

Nearly all shops are closed for Christmas proper.

At least in Toronto, I go to a few shops where most items are 80-90% off. I have gone to a hugo boss outlet on the 27th and picked up leather and other items at 90% off. Love that day, hate the credit card bill after.

If this is any indicator, I went to Saks.com and Neiman Marcus.com on Dec. 26 (last year, not this year) and there were tons of things with significant reductions. I noticed, however, that after Jan. 1, not only were most of the good things and sizes gone, the prices went up a little. I would say markdowns were about 60% immediately after Christmas, and hovered around 35-40% thereafter.
