How Fitted Should Overcoats Be?

The trend now seems to be for overcoats to have a very slim close fit. Yet I've seen people like Cary Grant wearing them much looser and still looking good. Is there any reason a coat can't be slightly baggy? In these two pictures the coats are not tight yet I think they look better for it. Sting in a Crombie and Cary Grant too.

At minimum should be "loose" enough to accommodate layers as needed for the cold.

I just got measured for a very slim fitting bespoke peacoat... I think thick fabric paired with a close fit is the most flattering look in tailoring. Everybody has baggy overcoats and their volume requires less tailoring, so I think a guy can really stand out if he puts in the effort to have a slim cut one.

Well, Daniel Craig wears a topcoat with very heavy waist suppression in the Spectre trailer and it makes him look like he has very womanly hips. I think overcoats should be loose enough to accommodate whatever you're wearing underneath.

It depends what you are going to be wearing under it.

I have a peacoat that is used for casual wear and it is fairly well fitted as it will only ever have a shirt and jumper under it. For a coat to go over a suit the fit is looser as not to crush the jacket
