How early do you plan your vacations?

Some of the people i know plan vacations (book tickets and such) 5 months in advance. Usually I book a week or 2 in advance for short trips, a month for longer trips. Just wondering if 5 months is common.

My vacations are booked several months in advance. For a couple examples, my May vacation was booked in December and the one for July was booked in January.

If I fly overseas, I book as soon as my vacation time is confirmed. For domestic trips, if its less than a week I book about one month in advance.

I want to book very early to take advantage of the cheaper tickets, but we always end up booking 1-2 months in advance lol.

Five months seems like a long time.

When booking with airline points, I'll book 2-3 months in advance. (Because I have to.)

For package tours, I book as late as possible. Our kids play a lot of sports, and we usually don't know the schedules very far in advance.

I'm never worried about missing out on a particular hotel or even a particular country. There is always someplace else.

Once, I booked on a Tuesday to go to Italy that Friday. I came home with a guide to Tuscany and said to my wife, "Guess what?". I'm lucky --- she likes to travel but isn't interested in any of the planning.

Much depends upon the trip, the season, etc. Certain venues and/or seasons require more advance planning than others. If a destination is greatly in demand, I'll book early. If that is not the case, I might book closer to the date of departure.

Quite a bit also depends on who is going. If I'm traveling with a group of family and/or friends, I tend to book much earlier than on those occasions when it's just the two of us or I alone.
