How do you tell if a tie's been dry cleaned?

How do you tell if a tie's been dry cleaned, if you look in used clothing places? Is it harder to tell if a darker tie has lost its luster, like midnight blue or dark green?

If it's been done well, then who cares?

If it has not been done well, the tie looks sad and pressed flat and is still lightly stained. Dry cleaning usually fails to remove stains from silk ties, in my limited experience.

Add to the above, if the edges are sharply creased rather than gently rolled.

The problem with dry cleaned neckties is usually not the cleaning but the pressing.

I don't know that there is a particular way to tell if you didn't see the tie before it was cleaned. If it looks OK to you, it's probably OK.

To further answer the Jose's post, yes, some slight stains can only be seen in good light. So do examine them carefully. On the other hand, if a thrift tie is a dud, you're out what, two dollars? Chances are you can still wear it under a v neck anyway.

I know some of the stain resistant silk ties I have warn against dry cleaning.

Seriously, didn't some people here warn that dry cleaning a tie can remove the luster in the silk?

try adding the luster back into the tie by using a similar colored cream, buff to a matte finish, and then wax polish to a mirror finish.

Lustre-Cream shampoo worked pretty well back in the day.
