How do you tell a sports jacket?

When buying sports jackets/blazers on ebay, it's easier to tell if it's orphaned or not when it has a pattern. But when it's of the more solid colour variety how can you tell? I got burned once already buying a jacket that when I received it was obviously an orphaned jacket (wasted money). Any tips to look for?

When I tell 'em I tell 'em and they better answer "how high, sir!!" very loudly. That's how I spot potential sports jackets.

So this is my question I guess. Can you have a solid coloured sports jacket?

Am I the only one confused by this post?

I'm assuming you saw pictures of it when you bought it.

Yes, it was a solid colour. So that is what i'm asking if buying a solid coloured sports jacket, what makes it different from an orphaned jacket? Or is that the point, no such thing as a solid coloured sports jacket?

Horn buttons would be a good clue. If the buttons are the same colour as the jacket, then it is surely an orphaned suit coat.

not true at all. Have a walk through the brioni dept. at Neimans and you will see black, navy, and grey solid color jackets with similar colored buttons.

This is probably a naive newbie question, but what's wrong with wearing an "orphaned" suit jacket? It's bad only because you know it was meant to be part of a suit?
