they are a necessity to keeping your shoes in shape long term, and prevent wrinkling. every shoe should, unless its airing out, have either a foot or a shoe tree in it.
is it possible to fix a shoe that has developed a wrinkle from being stored long term without a tree?

i did have a pair of shoes i liked that got pretty wrinkled, this was before i knew about shoe trees i was about 15. i put them in trees that fit very snugly and polished/conditioned them and left them in the trees for a nember of weeks. if i recall correctly they got at least %95 better. though i assume it depends on the quality of the leather as well.

Then i moved, and lined my walk in closet with them. then bought a few more after a few more shoes were purchased. I think i have a dozen of them now for my shoes and my wife's. I love em. theyre really handy.
