How do you revitalize or restore tongue on dress boots?

I notice that the tongue on my dress / casual boots wrinkle more than the rest of the boots.

For the body of the boots, I use a shoe tree, but is there a proper way or technique of storing the boots, so as to maintain the original shape of the tongue? If the tongue becomes too concave and folded (concave towards the wearer when boot is worn), do I simply clean, polish, buff, then convex it and lightly pull the tongue out and away, such as in the first image of one of my boots?

Is there a boot tree that specifically remolds the tongue along with the base (e.g. a shoe tree with a neck that the tongue simply wraps around)? Or, do you suggest a simpler, separate boot shaper, such as a pliable plastic insert which attempts to move back to its original horizontal shape, such as what's shown in the third image? Or, a separate insert/boot shaper that's a bit more complex but sturdy like in the fourth image (or will a Woodlore boot shaper work better?)? In your experience, does it work to maintain the tongue's shape? It also looks like I'll need to get the right size (much shorter in height than typical cowboy boots, and all are more of the height of, say, Red Wing 1907 and Alden Vanguard boots).

Thanks in advance.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
