Being the owner of what I consider a Specialty Retail store, I was curious to know how you all percieve what constitutes above average. Is it the selection, quality or the realized added value from the shopping experience.

Best Regards,

Gary

What does that second term actually mean?

I voted for "realized added value" assuming it means that I would pay more for the same item at a boutique assuming I get personal service that I perceive as "worth the difference" in price.

for me it's selection. I've almost never had bad service from a specialty retailer since they kinda need to be nice to everyone where a big corporate luxury store can afford to be dicks.

the key thing for me is how the store edits its stock....I've been in some stores that carry very few items but from labels I like, and the pieces they've chosen are all ones I'd wear. Of course it works both ways and if I like everything, it means someone else doesnt like anything. But I do appreciate when a store has a sartorial personality...which is tricky since you're potentially losing customers but retail is such a minefield anyways.

I voted for selection and quality. A store could have the best customer service in the world, and it certainly would be appreciated, but if it doesn't carry anything I like, I'm not going to shop there. I'd feel bad about it and probably say something like, "The folks there are really great. It's too bad they don't carry anything I'd ever wear."
