How do you keep your collars razor sharp?

I keep having this problem with my shirts that no matter how much I starch the collar, iron the collar, or use collar stays, the very edge, the "point" of the collar always seems to start bending, and it's becoming a major pet peeve of mine. Is this a result of the shirts I'm buying, perhaps the collar style (like spread vs. semi-spread) or is there something else I can do? If I could lace my collar with titanium, I'd do it hahaha, thanks SF.

OP, you are referring to the collar point bending at a point beyond the 1/4" edge stitching and the tip of the point, right? In other words, it's bending in a place where a collar stay can't help it? I have this problem with my Modern Tailor shirts and I haven't been able to correct it. It bothers me as well, and makes me reluctant to buy anyting but button down collars from them.

yes exactly... beyond the reach of a collar stay - where its pure cotton.

Some collars are edge stitched in a way that allows your stays to reach the end of your collar point. Unfortunately, I've only seen such work done well on very high-end custom shirts, so perhaps this is less helpful to you.

You could also consider stiffer fused interlinings. I'm not absolutely sure that would work, as I get all my collars made with soft interlinings, but my hunch is that it would. Perhaps Carl or some other shirtmaker on this board can answer for us.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
