Depends on the trip (and how much I want to carry).
I always like to have at least one nice shirt--so even if I am going skiing with my dad, I'll have a button down in with all of the t-shirts and technical wear.
Sometimes it is also easier to wear the nicer clothes on your travel day. I like to be dressed a bit nicer in airports and it keeps you from having to crumple and fold things into carryon luggage. Helps if you are leaving from the office (or going straight to the office when you return) since you are probably already wearing something decent.
A trip to a city is going to have more of a mix of nice clothes and a few activity clothes. I'll usually try to pick a few favorite new items and maybe some good old-standbys. Things that fit the destination and are somewhat versatile. Try to avoid mixing leathers--stick to either brown or black which makes it easier for everything to match.
