How do you determine what size trenchcoat you are?

I'm male, 5'7" and about average weight (140lbs.) and would like a basic long double-breasted trench coat. Nothing too close-fit. I like room. What size should I be looking for? I have no idea what the specific numbers and letters mean. I was also looking for something like a Stafford brand. I'd go and try some on to see, but I'll be ordering something online for convenience.

New to the whole 'clothes shopping' thing, as one can see.

Well, jackets only come in S, M, L, XL, etc.

Also - America. I remember at some point looking at the CDC's BMI chart, and for my height & weight, being in the normal range.

A suit jacket will come with your chest size. You can measure around your chest to get an estimate.

Go to a Marshalls or Burlington Coat factory and try on some sport coats and suits and find your size. Burlington has trenchcoats too.

Suit coat sizes correspond to the chest size of the wearer, not the measured size of the coat itself. So if you have a 38" chest, a size 38 suit coat should fit you. The chest of the coat will measure 40-42 inches, usually.

Outerwear such as a trench coat, even when it is sized like suits (38, 40, 42, etc) is sized to fit over the suit coat that is over your chest. It could measure 44-46 inches. In S-M-L sizing you are probably a S.

Best practice is to go to a store and try some trench coats on. If you will usually wear one with a suit or sport coat, make sure you have on one of those before you try on the trench.

Trench and overcoats, when sized like a suit (36, 38...etc.) as opposed to s-m-l, will be sized to fit a suit underneath and you should choose the same as your suit size. For your measurements, your most likely a 36 or a small. Just have to go to a store and try one on if you don't know for sure.
