Cut a long story short I am attempting to dip my pen in the company ink by showing interest in a colleague at work.(That's not the point). I suggested we perhaps catch-up and 'lets talk again soon'. She responsed by email 'Looking forward to catching up soon'.

I have got myself in a mess by starting with the the word 'soon' because I am not sure how far away 'soon' is meant to be? Is it a few days? A week?.

Get yourself out of the mess by assigning a definition to "soon" now. No more than two to three days, I'd say.

And I'd be wary of dipping your pen in that company ink.

Update

Ok'soon' has turned out to be less than 4 days.

I called and left a message on her voicemail, then she called me back and asked me if there was something she needed to do for me (work related). I asked her about her availability over next few days to which she was confused for a sec and then told me she will call back again as there was someone with her in her office.

She did ring back and we agreed funnily enough for Thursday after work :)

Obviously there is a little bit of interest otherwise she would not have agreed. Now the ball is in my court to completely and utterly ******* up....hope not.

In the OP, I think four or five days is about right.

"Soon" at work means "stop bothering me with this ****, it's low on my list of priorities".

OP..she is interested. She also wants to keep it on the DL since she needed to call you back after the person left her office.
Take her to a non-work crowd location so both of you can relax. I would just get some drinks and flirt like a MOFO!!

Nah, just keep overthinking it and she'll continue to think you're cute and charming.

Ok a little late but better than never.

Ended up going on the first date. Not sure entirely what she thought it was but post date I followed up and we have been exchanging flirtatious messages and she is now well aware of my interest. 2nd date is on Wednesday and I will take her to a modest Japanese restaurant and then for a few drinks somewhere nice and there start the seduction :p

So two questions
1. What do I do between now and wednesday? Do not want to get into long SMS exchanges but don't want to be out of contact for that ling in case she forgets me and the reason why she agreed to a 2nd date

2. Short of smooth words any advice on how to push her current interest over the cliff so she actually really starts liking me and not just an interest

I think the best advice I can give myself is not to take her too seriously and get on with other aspects of life.
