How do you order/buy a bespoke Turnbull & Asser shirt or necktie? By phone, or in person?
With a shit load of luck. I have tried to purchase MTM from Florida without any success (read: many, many phone calls and emails), and then I went to the NYC store on 57th and had them measure me. I then requested that they send two little sample books to my address in Florida, so I could take a week or two to decide on the exact fabric / patterns.
Well, the samples never arrived and after 3 phone calls, I have given up. Back to RTW H&K I go...
Amen. As a former T&A bespoke and RTW customer, I feel confident in saying that in terms of follow-up and reliability, they are the worst company I have ever seen. Additionally, at $240+ per shirt, are you sure that your money might not be better spent elsewhere? Perhaps go through your local Neiman Marcus if you still want to get measured for T&A. They have MTM trunk shows with T&A reps, or the Neiman's tailor can measure you according to T&A's instructions. If something goes wrong, at least you can complain to Neimans too. Good luck, you're gonna need it.
... walking into their store in london isn't much of a pleasant experience either, even if you just want to buy a ready made shirt from them, very disappointing experience
A word of warning about T & A bespoke shirts - they make beautiful shirts, but they arent for someone who desires a quick and painless process. I have bought shirts from them for 5 years now, and I can say that the shirts take an inordinant amount of time to recieve (at least 4-5 months). The process is painfully slow, and there is really nothing they can do about it. Additionally, while I have never had an actual defect, I have, on more than one occasion, opened up my box of new shirts and recieved the wrong shirt. They are the correct size, but for some reason the material is different. To their credit, T&A has given me those shirts for free, so I dont think its that big a deal, and luckily I have always liked the mistaken shirts.
They are terrible at returning phone calls, constantly say the shirts will be here in 2 weeks (this is their stock answer to all delivery questions). Even so, they are great shirts, and all the hassle is worth it to me.
I was in Neiman Marcus in Atlanta a few months ago and ventured over to the shirtings counter to look into T&A bespoke (or what is really T&A MTM, I guess). One funny thing that happened was Neiman's T&A notebook was on the counter and it had Neiman's wholesale prices in there as well as the retail prices. The sales person didn't even take any notice when I looked through it. Huge (and I mean HUGE) markups at Neiman's, as if that's a shock. Some of the fabrics were as much as 55% mark up.
The other alarming thing was the salesperson told me they were currently running at about 4 months to take delivery, which is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know if it's any better in NY.
Why don't you post some new pictures, so we can get a better sense of what type of shirt would look best? Or, maybe, you're just recycling the same pictures because you don't have any real ones?
Am I the only person who thinks this is a troll? Why do you need to ask how to order a necktie?
If this is just a big joke, I find it pretty disgusting that you're making fun of people with handicaps.
Jon, you might want to contact T&A's Jermyn Street location for swatches. I did (by regular mail), and they sent me quite a few swatches - promptly.
As for markup, the suggested retail price is generally 2.5 - 2.75 times the wholesale price, at least for MTM clothing.
If you're having that many problems, IM me. I might be able to help.
Just one note:
you cannot order a truly bespoke shirt by phone or just by having your sizes measured.
You have to try the fitting of your shirt at least two times, and at least one time with the shirt basted and with a model in paper of the collar.
It's not the price that bothers me, it's the lack of customer service for the money charge that bothers me.
Why should I beg for T&A for their business, when H&K has always left me satisfied? Plus, the primary reason I like T&A MTM service is that they will match patterns, something H&K already does in their RTW shirts.
Markups run from anywhere to 25% to 60%. 55% isn't really HUGE. What did you expect the markup to be?
Markups on jewlery are huge. around 100+%.

Usually wholesale jewelry pricing moves in tiers: 100% markup: key 1/3 of retail price: triple key And so on and so fourth... Jon.
