How do I wax proof a cotton field jacket?

I recently bought a great cotton field jacket and would like to tweak it further by adding some wax proofing. The jacket is 100% cotton and insulated so adding a wax covering will really make this jacket a keeper.

Can this be done? Are Filson and Barbor jackets just 100% plain cotton with a wax coating? So I could reinvent the same?

I used to own a Barbor Backhouse jacket which I re-proofed with a can of wax, however it took forever to dry and somewhat ruined the coat by making it so sodden with wax. I certainly don't want to wax my new field jacket to this level, moreso, want to apply a thin coating to give it a waxy feel and look.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! So this won't ruin the jacket? I don't know if wax cotton is pretreated in another way before the wax is applied or whether it's just 100% cotton with wax added.
