How do I polish light tan leather shoes?

Evenin' everyone,

I have a pair of Lacoste chukkas in light tan. I like the way they look, but they have some routine scuffs that don't seem to go away with my routine shoe shining method (apply polish with a brush, rub in with a damp cloth, hit it with a dry brush for a while until it's shiny again). I'm using tan Kiwi shoe polish.

This is the exact shoe if it makes a difference (I know they look like pleather, but they're real leather).

Thanks everyone!

Typically, the issue isn't going to be the polish. Especially with cheaper leathers you need to get polish on there before the leather gets scuffed. Once scuffed the only thing polish does is "cover up" the scuff but the leather is already damaged. So, with the cheaper leather you put on a protective coat of polish so it's that and not the leather that gets scuffed.

Now, some leathers - like chromexcel - or other types of oil infused leather don't take polish very well at all. But you can easily rub scuffs out of them as long as it's just that - a scuff.

Of course, everything is relative too. All leather is going to show wear and tear, so maybe a photo of your actual boots and the scuffs you're talking about would help.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
