Potpourri is kinda girly and plug in air fresheners are overpowering and smell like chemicals. Is there a subtle, natural smelling option (other than good hygiene)?

Ionizer or Ozone producing air fresheners work by removing the smell particles from the air rather than covering them up. O3 is harmful to your health so I'd stick to a powerful ionizer.

(oh yea, do the laundry and open a window, too.)

Something safer and easier. if you have a microwave, a few ml of Vanilla essence/extract, microwave for 45 or so seconds. I don't remember where I found that but it works well for me as I cannot use more toxic things like air fresheners (chemicals are dangerous for birds).

Candles are slightly less girly. If anyone asks, you can say your ex left them there. They do make manlier looking/smelling ones though.

Get an essential oil heater... a small candle usually heats up a few drops of essential oil (I suggest lavender) in a ceramic bowl. You shouldn't have much trouble finding one online or in a local offbeat store. It is easy to go overboard with so... crack a window too.

I like the fresh flowers route (1-2 settings). Also having a few plants around the house. Also, you gotta have some fresh air ventilating through the house from time to time. That should be enough

    +1

And if you get candles, I'd suggest soy candles. They burn very clean (no black stuff) and the scent is subtle.

Chicks dig candles (and they'll think your brilliant and in touch with your feminine side if you have a diffuser).

Claus Porto makes this Tabaco candle, which smells of coffee and tabacco. [IMG] L'Artisan Parfumer also makes these terracotta balls filled with amber, they are somewhat pricy though: [IMG]

If you have air conditioning, you can get pads which go over the air intake which add an odour to the air. I believe there's a "neutral odour" version too. Picked one up the other day, was pretty cheap ($8?) but unsure of it's effectiveness yet.
