To answer the question, I think that you can either demur or tell them something like "I probably paid too much, but I like it. Thanks!" if they are admiring your stuff.

Well the compliments come but they dont ask for the price unless its an expensive label they know of. I get compliments for Margiela but most poeple I know dont have a clue as to who Margiela is so they dont bother asking.

An acquaintance was trying to make me look like a fool in front of other people, giving me a hard time for spending an amount that translates into approx 150$ on a jumper. We live in the country with the world's highest tobacco prices and he is a smoker. The same amount will only give you 12/13 packages with 20 cigarettes. Needless to say he was the one looking (and feeling) stupid. I told him to mind his own business thereafter.

Tell them its bespoke whether it is or not.

Tell them that you saved a member of the Prussian royal family, and they repaid you by life debting a tailor to you. So all your clothes are free...

For some reason, the question I generally get is "I like your ____ where did you get it?", and generally this is my answer. When I do get asked how much I paid for something, I just say I found it at a thrift store, whether it's true or not. It often is, and it shut people up nicely without sounding snobbish.

How about " I took it off a dead Hobo. It cost me nothing. It cost him his life."

Tell them you killed a man, just to watch him die. And then you took his pants.

edit: Dammit, that's ^^^ what I get for not reading the thread first. Lazy of me.

Give the answer in Cork-style slang:

Q: "How much did your jeans cost?"

A: "Ask me bollocks"

This is all well and good unless people are inquiring about your clothes to try to be snobbish themselves. Then all bets are off.
