How can tracksuits command such high prices?

How can tracksuits command such high prices? I have seen tracksuits in Harrods in London priced well above very expensive real suits. Thousands of dollars, pounds or euros. EBay also quote extreme original prices, and had I not seen these items at ordinary retail prices I would have thought these were scams. And they were ordinary looking in cut and cloth as far as I could see, although there were some leather details and additional extras. I particularly noticed Stefano Ricci as provider of the most expensive ones. What is the value here, if any? Are these used for sports, or what?

Primarily because of self-referential influencers who have dragged down the norms of decorum (along with behavior and language) of what is considered stylish attire, and their fans/followers. IMHO.

They look cheap, but are expensive. An expensive suit may be identified by complex construction and brilliant cloth. Not these tracksuits as far as I can see.

When I was growing up and played a lot of tennis, and was a huge fan of Bjorn Borg, he made the Fila track suit a popular outfit - for its intended purpose. Not to go to dinner, the mall, or otherwise flaunt to try and come off as cool. Unfortunately, the later has been adopted and become an established cultural phenomenon. And that has devolved into folks wearing tracksuits purely out of lazyness seems, it all realms of public life.

This is in the US? Not like that in Europe, I think.

it’s a free market. The makers do not command the prices at all—rather it is the people willing to pay those prices. Isn’t the whole notion of fashion predicated on this concept?

It’s also a matter of perspective. To someone earning less than one US dollar a day in the developing world, the value of much of what we buy on a daily basis could be questioned.

That some people chose to spend a lot of money is exactly my point! I am not critisizing, but wanting to understand this choice. (Oh, yes, you can sense my skeptism, but that is not why I raise the question.)

Yeah I know. Just spouting off impelled by my strong disdain for tracksuits and the degradation of what has become acceptable attire.

So, I know you have written quite a bit about the casualization phenomenon.

Please provide some links to jog the memory of your perspective.
