Houston 2009 Marathon / half matahon sold out

Okay, this marathon has sold out in previous years, but this year we're not even six months to the starting line and all 18,000 slots are spoken for.

There has been an undercurrent of grumbling since some people are buying up race slots (or bibs) to re-sell them to people who will actually race, but this is getting ridiculous. I was sorely tempted to sign up but wanted to see whether I would actually be in shape come race day. Right now that's an open question, and I don't normally procrastinate this long.

Maybe they'll open the 2010 race registration soon, and I can get into that one.

Wow - isn't Houston one of the "fattest" cities in the US? I was under the impression that people there aren't into running.

The marathon is a pretty big event here, similar in a sense to the MS 150 bike ride.

Thomas, I thought about signing up as well, and was aware that the slots were filling up, but like you, I was waiting to determine if I was in good enough shape....it's all unfortunate now.

If you come to Houston, go by the Memorial Park running trail. You will see hundreds of people running the 3 mile loop all times of day.

It's one of the more popular running spots in the area, and is more popular than ever.

This is a constant problem with internet ticket selling. The problem is not so much scalpers as that there really are 18k people in Houston who are willing to bet that they'll be in shape by then. And the internet makes it really easy to register.

But there are many, many awesome races that are open until race day. You just have to accept that races like NYC are way overpopular. It's like giving up on trying to get WILCO tickets and just finding a great unknown bad where you're three feet from the stage.

Yeah, I ran there yesterday and today. I used to hate running, but when you can run on a quality surface and in nice surroundings, it makes running a more enjoyable experience.

Yeah, the nice scenery helps a little, too.
