Houndstooth Suit; appropriate?

I've recently purchased matching mini-houndstooth jacket and slacks. My first thought was to wear them separately. But I was wondering how appropriate it would be to wear them together as a suit?
It's not anything expensive(Purchased the pair for $75), but I'm right out of school, on a budget and figured the combo very versatile and that I could wear the jacket as a sport coat with dark slacks, and the pants with a blue blazer.

+1. Have a houndstooth myself and wear it all the time.

The houndstooth pattern is very small and looks almost like birdseye. Not bad IMO. Just no black shirts please.
