Honda's logo-free F1 car

I think this is brilliant:

Honda's just unveiled F1 car has almost no corporate logos or colors. Instead, it's covered by a picture of the Earth to raise environmental awareness, and commercial funds are raised by licensing the use of images of the car to various companies. I hope they can make this work, so more F1 cars can get rid of their logos.

Now if the FIA and manufacturers would just make F1 into a true technology race that addresses current energy concerns ...

It would be much more influential if NASCAR were to do this, since it is the most popular motorsport in the U.S., which as we know uses a disproportionate share of energy.

I feel that F-1 is the pinnacle of racing and there should be fewer technological restrictions, not more. They've dumbed it down enough.

Honda needs to worry more about giving Button a car that will win him a championship and worry less about marketing gimmicks.

I don't know anything about racing, but isn't this a bit like selling fur coats emblazoned with the PETA logo?

Yes, it's ironic, but I suppose something is better than nothing. Commercial sponsorship is worth tens of millions, so at least this isn't an idle gesture.

Point taken. I used to have a housemate who had a leather jacket with "Save The Wild Animals" (actually, I think the phrase may have been written in French, but I'm not sure) on the back. When I gave her a hard time about it, she pointed out that cows aren't wild animals.

Its great that Honda would put themselves on the line with such a bold statement. Hopefully it isn't a publicity stunt, which i think it isn't, and others will follow suit.

It's genius. I'm sure Honda has double edged intentions here. It is both a publicity play (hey, I'm green. Honda's are green with their Hybrids & ULEV vehicles) and to raise social awareness for the environment. It's hard to imagine a downside for them.

Only thing I can think of is that Honda hasn't been a F1 contender in years so it would be ironic that the environment would finish in the bottom half of the rankings!

I would argue that they've basically NASCAR-ized F-1 as is. I mean, not even letting companies pick how many cylinders their engines should have?

I'd love to see F-1 made relevant again. I think they should scrap the engine rules entirely, and replace them with a fuel consumption rule. (Or, perhaps even better, several fuel consumption rules. One for gas, one for Diesel, and maybe one for an alcohol-based fuel. Formulae for all of the above should probably be standardized by the FIA.) Kind of like the old Group C of the 1980s.

Honda already got blasted today by the environmentalists.

Ten bucks says they still won't perform for crap this season. It'll be McL-M and Ferrari I think.

I doubt it matters at all in relation to the real environmentalists. Honda just wants the people wondering "Civic Hybrid, or Prius?" to end up buying their car.

I agree. Not only is the "Civic or Prius" segment of the population easier to please than the true environmentalists they've got to be a much better potential source of revenue.
