Am reading Zachary Scott: Hollywood's Sophisticated Cad, by Ronald L. Davis. Most engaging tale centering on another of tinseltown's most elegant men. Born to immense wealth and prestige, Mr. Scott is that rare creature: an American aristocrat. His clothes: strictly Saville Row. His manner: impeccable. Scott's most famous role: Monte Beragon, in Mildred Pierce.

Over six feet tall, equipped with a chic face and fit physique, Zachary Scott's elegance and sophisticated manner, enthrall classic film lovers to this day.

Mr. Scott died at age 51, of brain cancer.

When I grow up I want to be a dashing villain! Must read this book.
Currently struggling with Saturday (McEwen). Not really taking to his florid prose, but after he clears his throat he may find something to say. We'll see.

Well . . . if you want to see a dashing, villain . . . watch MILDRED PIERCE. They don't get more dashing, or more wicked, than Monte B.

Uh . . . that's one way of putting it.

Suave, indeed. Remember too, that none of this had to be learned; ZS was born with every possible advantage. Enormous wealth, social position, a fantastic body for clothes, a chic, 'film noir' face, and a natural disposition to deport himself in an aristocratic, high style posture. If you haven't seen Mildred Pierce, do so. You'll never forget it.

There is a theater named after him here in Austin, as he was born here.

Yes, I know that! I have a friend from Texas, who is familiar with Scott's family. An engrossing story. Mr. Scott never would have succeeded, were it not for his family's ability to bankroll him . . . his wife's family was rich, too. Money all over the place. While studying in England, Scott was chauffeured in a Rolls Royce. Starving actors, goes first class.

LK, soon after The Southerner was released, Zach and some buddies, ended up in a small town restaurant; a newly married couple sat across the room. The 'bride' had seen Zachary Scott in his latest film, recognized him, and fell in love all over again, crawling over ZS with her husband, in clear view.
