Hollywood Inspiration: Clothing in Film & Television (Spring/Summer)

Given the number of people that arrive to StyleForum based on the clothing in film & television, I thought it might be interesting to see a(nother) thread dedicated to the topic.

We'll see whether there is any interest, but the following are some loosely summer-themed films that had great costume departments. Admittedly, most of these happen to be on my favorite movie list. In fact, I came out with these first 5 films based on what I've watched the most in my library. Google provided the examples.

Feel free to post films that have your favorite costumes or featured pieces that you feel have gone on to be iconic. Should there be enough interest, we could do another for Autumn/Winter in September.

The first film that makes me think of spring/summer is The Talented Mr. Ripley. One of my favorite films and the scenery and costumes were great.

Dickie Greenleaf stands out as a trustfund baby whose life consists of jazz, beaches, and nightlife.

Likewise, Herbert, Dickie's father, plays a small role but dresses the part of "old money."

Next up, The Godfather II. For some reason, I've always thought The Godfather felt like an autumn or winter movie, perhaps because of the scene where Vito is shot happens to be near Christmas. Anyway, I think of heat, Nevada, and Cuba when it comes to The Godfather II.

This first particular look inspired my own last-minute costume for Carnival last year:

I really like the next movie, though it may not be an obvious choice for a list such as this: Caddyshack. He may not get respect, but no one does FU clothing like Rodney Dangerfield.

Next up, Jaws and the "fisherman-chic" wardrobe department:

I'd buy this jacket. Since it's SF, I'd probably buy it at 90% off and then try to find an event that would necessitate it once per year:

The Indiana Jones franchise always seemed sweaty and featured exotic locations. While his field outfit didn't change by huge amounts, Indiana Jones himself gave us his iconic hat.

My style inspirations for this year are probably Harvey Spector from Suits (I'm in better shape than I used to be and love his no-nonsense confident style), Tan France from Queer Eye (PRINTS EVERYWHERE) and a bit of Bond/Indy for some weddings I have to attend and host (off-white dinner jacket for the win).

My style inspirations for this year are probably Harvey Spector from Suits (I'm in better shape than I used to be and love his no-nonsense confident style), Tan France from Queer Eye (PRINTS EVERYWHERE) and a bit of Bond/Indy for some weddings I have to attend and host (off-white dinner jacket for the win).

I'm glad you mentioned something from television. I'm so far behind any of the current TV series that I wouldn't know what to add.

I don't own an ivory dinner jacket, but I'm always game for a reason to own an ivory dinner jacket.

Another movie that I find hilarious is What About Bob? Dr. Leo Marvin wears pretty classic menswear to his summer home. Nothing beats Bob's t-shirt.

Great thread Hans, I often try to coordinate outfits, textures and colors based on someone that has worn them and made them look good. One of the best combining brown and gray, herringbone and flannel.

Great idea for a thread @HansderHund ! Since I live in a tropical climate, new ideas for warm weather style are always of interest.

One film that I feel exemplifies "summer style" is Thunderball. Connery's clothing throughout the film is classic. But I also think it is very relevant today, especially when you see how brands like Orlebar Brown and Sunspel are using that 60s aesthetic for inspiration. Plus, it's never a bad time to share pics of Claudine Auger

I purposely ignored Bond in the hopes that you’d come along and post some of your grouping shots. I always get a kick out of those. That’s a great site, the type that I could find myself (and time) lost.

I really like Orlebar Brown and have a couple of pairs of swim shorts and it’s absolutely a throwback to the ‘60s. I noticed last year, and even more so this year, that the trend has trickled down to department store brands. I see shorter, tighter swim shorts from every brand imaginable. It’s always interesting to watch that evolution.

Saved these and meant to add them as an obligatory Steve McQueen film. They also reference those ‘60s swim shorts in The Thomas Crown Affair.

I may not be up to date on current TV series, but I do like Law & Order. When I say “Law & Order,” I mean the original early years.

A wonderfully talented actor, Jerry Orbach played Det. Lenny Briscoe and replaced Paul Sorvino’s character. I can’t remember whether his character’s background had military experience, but I do remember his bridge coat he’d wear. He’d also sport Ray Ban aviators in the summer episodes.

Before he was Mr. Big on Sex and the City, Chris Noth was Det. Mike Logan. He had a penchant for wool ties and leather jackets.

ADA Ben Stone, played by Michael Moriarty, happens to have an incredible speaking voice. He and DA Adam Schiff were pretty trad, through and through. In one episode, Adam Schiff even refers to Stone’s “Brooks Brothers suits.”

ADA Paul Robinette had a younger, trendier (for the early ‘90s) style.

ADA, and later DA, Jack McCoy had a motorcycle and wore a beat-to-hell Barbour. I’m pretty sure he had a duffle coat as well, but Google isn’t giving me the right image.
