Hollywood Casual, Down to Their Toes

IT was only recently that Donald De Line, a leading Hollywood producer and a keen observer of local trends, noted the onslaught of nearly naked feet, and not just on women.

Suddenly, flip-flops "” those slabs of rubber with V-shaped slivers between the toes "” are ubiquitous in what were once dressed-up settings.

Flip-flops are a causal look that can't really be dressed up. However, they would work well for wearing to jury duty with a short-sleeve shirt, brooch and ascot--which I'm sure was featured at this week's Milan men's shows.

The flip flops are forgivable under those circumstances, but the jean shorts...never.

I'm at my office today wearing flip-flops, jeans and a Peanuts t-shirt.

Flip-flops and jeans are pretty common attire here.

I don't see a problem with flop flops at all. In fact I wear them (a nice tan and green leather RL number) every chance I get. And If I could I would wear them with a suit.

The only problem is with wearing flip flops to innapropriate places. Obviously a no-no at the office.

But if one is just lounging around town in a cotton or linen suit and sleek brown/black leather flip-flops, I see no major faux pas

How odd. No one has pointed out that most people don't like looking at men's exposed feet. Some feet are prettier than others, of course. And if they smell, women will smell them before guys do.

Not to boast, but every pedicurist who has ever touched my feet has remarked that I have the most beautiful feet that they had ever seen on a man. So, I've got that going for me

In honor of this thread, today I am wearing a tan linen 3-button suit, bright pink dress shirt (untucked) and leather flip-flops.

I have received numerous comments about my Miami Vice look today.

I dislike flip flops on men for a couple of reasons. First, men's feet are ugly. More significantly, they're a manifestation of the middle-American obsession with leisure as the high point of life. So many people dress as though they were going to spend the day by the pool whenever they have the chance and regardless of whether or not they are in fact by a pool. I find the idea that dressing well is an imposition very Philistine and irritating.

I suppose I just don't relate to people whose idea of the sublime is sitting on a beach.
