The same phenomenon is apparent in the newer high grade pipes which seem to be from briar chosen for figuration and grain, not lightness and smoking suitability.

Why are you trying to send me to an early grave by seeing those pics? The layer-cake-like ones kill me with beauty.

However, I think they are all Turkish walnut, which has a bit more of Claro's 'feathering' which you can see, and perhaps that's what JLib is referencing. If you had to corner me, I do prefer a straight up English, but I would not turn away any of those fine specimens...
