Anyone care to share anxieties before/horror stories of/creative solutions to trying to travel over the holidays?

I myself am not looking forward to the crawl up 95 from DC to Philly for Thanksgiving, especially with road work north of the Delaware tolls. Suggestions for alternate routes very welcome!

Didn't know where to put this thread, though it was arguably a cultural thing.

I'm not sure which side you're talking about as having constructions, but from Delaware where it splits off to PA/NJ, you can take the NJ route and it's only a slight detour to Philadelphia -- Cross the Del Mem Br. and take I-295 North to Philly.

And As a veteran of the DC-NY route, if you want to avoid traffic, you just have to drive at night, 10pm or thereafter. There really isn't any other way.

As a resident of the Great Garden State, I have to say that you just have to grit your teeth and bear it. We deal with the kind of traffic that most people only deal with a few times a year during the holidays on a day-to-day basis, so you learn to live with it.

I would recommend getting a GPS device. They have a nifty little "detour" button that can help get you out of a lot of pickles.

Texas_jack, the train is well over $100 round trip; otherwise I'd consider it. I could just hop on the r5 from 30th...

earthmover, I'm headed west of philly, so the jersey side doesn't do me much good, unless I want to loop back through the city and out 76. Thanks, though.

odoreater, I'm fully aware of NJ's traffic. God only knows how much time I've spent listening to Jersey 101.5's middling golden oldies, just to hear the traffic reports.

I'll probably leave late as suggested, but still, any advice from area shunpikers?

How about leaving early Wednesday morning or early Thursday afternoon?

Sorry for the hijack, but man, that's a memory -- Dennis and Judi are the only radio talk show I have ever enjoyed. I used to laugh my ponderous posterior off when they are on form or when Judi is taking someone to the cleaners. They still on?

Yup, they're still on. I don't get a chance to listen to them much because they're on from like 10 -2 or something like that. I don't even get to listen to the Jersey Guys anymore, who are on from 2-7.

This is absolutely, 100% the way to make this trip. I have done Boston - DC countless times..... Rarely in daylight.

Nice. Am glad to hear. While I appreciate your hours, missing the Jersey Guys is no loss! I didn't like Scott and Casey, but even they were better than these two twits.

With the weather, I've given up. Just gonna wait til tomorrow. I'll see all the jerks at home in less than a month anyway.

I also borrowed a GPS with an "avoid interstates" function. Might try it tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.
