It is the amazing Fresco line by Hardy Minnis. Coarse and durable, it is its own beast. My only regret is not having more suits commissioned with this lovely fabric.

Yes - a Brooks camel hair polo coat, circa 2005. If I remember correctly, I bought it directly after Xmas in 2004, when Brooks used to have special discounts if one bought something before 1:00 PM on December 26th. The more recent versions are all much shorter in length.

I thought so. That definitely represents the one that got away, for me. I saw the coat online a few years ago, on sale, probably just after Christmas. I didn't pull the trigger then, thinking that I would do so "later". Alas, that coat, the one you have, vanished never to return. As you say, what Brooks thereafter described as a "Polo Coat" is barely knee length.

Some years after I bought the coat, I was discussing it with the gentleman who used to do my MTM commissions at the downtown branch of Brooks, and it was his opinion that Martin Greenfield might have the patterns for the coat in the configuration in which mine was made. Otherwise, I am sure that, with your MTM and bespoke connections, that a coat of the same length could be made for you, and yes, it's too bad that the ones they market now are barely knee length. Sic transit gloria mundi . . .

Ironically enough, the Joseph Abboud coat, also camel hair, which I wear with much more frequency, I bought just after buying the Brooks one, only because it was a close-out at the end of the season at my local discounter, and it was too cheap not to buy. As the philosopher said, "Who knew?".

My Burberry camel hair coat is just about the ideal length, in my opinion, for a polo coat. It is 126cm from the collar seam to the bottom of the coat. I expect to receive a polo coat of that length sometime in March. As someone who lives in a climate where overcoats are rarely necessary, I have way too many. Oh, well, what's one more, eh?

You should see the coats that Spier and Mackay are selling as "polo coats." Pretty soon, vendors will be offering pea coats under that name.

Aflter long search, I found a nice long coat in a second-hand shop in a color that I liked (I wanted a darker brown than the common camel color, but not a positively dark brown; the photo makes it appear greenish, but it is actually caramel in color). To judge from the style of lettering on the label (which says that it was "tailored expressly for the Harvard Cooperative Society"---a shop that has not sold garments like this for decades), I estimate that it was made in the 1960s. It was in a size 42, and I wear a size 40: I had to pay almost the price of the coat over again to have it cut down to fit me ($100 for the tailoring; $125 for the coat).
