Though a drunken white person did once come up to me slurring "whyreyouinnasuit?" in a hostile manner there.

I have had this happen several times in New York. It has always just been due to somebody's drunkenness and not culturally related.

About two months ago I walked into a bar and this drunk took a swing at me immediately almost falling off of his chair while screaming "Asians!" Now, I am not Asian and I don't think I look close to being Asian, but I guess to a drunkard I must.

I did not understood this.

I'd like to share something with all of you. When I was a little kid, maybe 9 or 10 or something whenever I would see fabric fold around a man's genital region upon sitting I would call this sight a "wally". I introduced my father to this concept. I said to him, see that guy's pants folding around that guy's balls? That's called a "wally". My father thought this so funny that to this day we continue to point out "wallies" in plain sight to each other. I even taught my girlfriend to spot and label "wallies" in public. It is great fun, teh wally.

It's entirely unrelated to my love of clothes, but I find discussions of clothes and perception to be fascinating.

Consider starting a thread devoted to this.

I am 100% serious.

Cheers,

Ac

Edit: Holdfast's 'wide boy' thread, for example, dealt with a very specific cultural instance of the topic you're raising.

That's a cool jacket. That outfit really screams for some burgundy/oxblood shoes. I still like it though.

I'm starting to develop a dislike for anything over a sliver of shirt cuff showing...if that. Not sure why, but my taste is changing.

I've come to the recent conclusion that I want to lengthen the sleeves on several of my jackets for this very reason.

Clags: I feel ya. Even if you weren't in Korea, there's no question that what others perceive of you is important. I, fortunately, get a pass because I tell people I make suits for a living, so they don't think I'm self-important or whatever, but few have such a good excuse for overdressing.
