It's entirely unrelated to my love of clothes, but I find discussions of clothes and perception to be fascinating.

Me too. It's one of the many reasons I miss having dear old Holdfast around. His departure was a really serious loss to this side of SF.

Not making fun of you at all. But to be honest, I think it's a combination of the above, and the fact that I want to wear what I want to wear and what I enjoy, and if other people have a problem with it, will that's just too bad.

I just find it odd how many people are so influenced by what people will think of them if they dress better than others. I think it has a lot to do with insecurity and I don't think even at work people care as much as they think. Sure you might foster comments, but people, especially at work always having something to say. Little things become conversations pieces to break monotony. When I get a haircut people will without fail, "hey did you get a haircut?" Who the **** cares if I got a haircut? Why bring it up? People seriously like to hear themselves talk and appearance is the easiest thing for them to latch onto. I swear if I get new socks this one lady will notice and bring it up and for what? People are just so nosey and odd.

I had a nice conversation about the way you dress and how it correlates to your career's success.

My position at the office does have some influence on how I dress. I want to dress confidently because I need to command respect from my team. Now don't get me wrong, I am NOT saying you will earn respect just by dressing nicely. But it does help.

My friend who also had a team of people under him said that in hind sight that he wished that he had dressed better. He never owned a suit even as a mid-level manager while people who worked for him did wear suits everyday. He said he would have been more successful in dealing with his team if the way he dressed was not an issue, it however was.

I gotta hit the stall.

That said, there are only a small number of threads which I read with regularity (this one is one), so if he's changed his mind and posted elsewhere I wouldn't be aware of it.

It's annoying when you get called out in a bar after work and you have to show someone your business card to prove that you're in a suit not to impress anyone or put on false airs but because you're being forced to wear it. Especially so when you don't want to be wearing it (as I hinted at earlier, it was super restrictive)

Did this actually happen to you? Because that's super weird.

That's a cool jacket. That outfit really screams for some burgundy/oxblood shoes. I still like it though.

I'm starting to develop a dislike for anything over a sliver of shirt cuff showing...if that. Not sure why, but my taste is changing.

Yup, only in Korea, and only when in suits (though Koreans are much more aware of the difference between a suit and an odd jacket and trousers). Though a drunken white person did once come up to me slurring "whyreyouinnasuit?" in a hostile manner there.

Texans are far too easy going for that jazz.

IS: it's a good topic of convo. And key is that it's my preference and not something I'd advocate for others. And not something I impose on others, either. What people where and why they wear it is their business.

I do judge people based on execution. You'll never hear me criticize a person for dressing like a hipster, as long as they aren't dressed like a poorly dressed hipster.
