Trying to approximate this look from the Drake’s winter lookbook with stuff I already own. Gf says I look like I’m going to the republican national convention 😂 What do you think?
Well you dont have the right jacket here for that look, but also imo thats good. I feel like the use of this suit in this lookbook was a flop. I think a different jacket would have been much better. Heck even a navy DB blazer.

Is your jacket black or navy?

Imo the suit jacket works in that photo because of the texture of the flannel, and because the pinstripes that are spaced very far apart make it feel more fashion-forward and less corporate, but I definitely understand the gripe. And yes a navy DB blazer would also have gone hard in that photo.

My jacket is a very dark navy corduroy that looks black under most lighting conditions.

IMO, the high-waisted denim is an essential element of the look. Regardless of the fabrics, I don't think you'll get there with low-rise jeans.

I think this is the key. These are Levi’s 501 ‘93 which are not exactly low rise, but not high waisted by any stretch either.

Do you have any recs for high waisted jeans? I have a pair of Sugar Cane 1966 which are high rise but the legs are a bit wider than I’d like for pairing with a sport coat. Would love some that don’t cost $450 as the Drake’s jeans do

Outside my area of expertise. :) Perhaps others here can help.

Not sure of the quality, but J Crew has some higher rise trousers style jeans.

^^^

how about a pair of thick dark brown cords or dark brown flannel wool trousers to pair with that tweed coat? How about a bone woolen vest to complete the look, it could work. How about a chocolate trilby to complete the look (assuming you can pull it off)?

Your look could be smashing, it has potential. The pocketsquare is good, so is the coat and shirt and tie. The difficult thing is nailing the entire look....not so easy to do for the average Joe climbing the style ladder. Who is skilled at visualising colour combinations in their head?...some can do it, but many cannot.

Just sharing ideas.

I think your girlfriend is both observant and funny.

As previous posters have pointed out, the high waisted jeans are probably key to the look. But as we spoke about in the other thread, it's also about the context. The style that looks like a contemporary twist on classic menswear in the look book easily becomes a business mullet (or republican convention ready) in a day-to-day setting. As Derek Guy would preach, clothing is a social language. Different looks carry different associations, and those associations are influenced by where they are worn, and by whom.

As for higher waisted jeans, Berg and Berg jeans are pretty good in that respect. Overpriced, but often at up to 50% sale, in which case they're a fairly good deal (about $200 on sale). I would also stay away from the very pale denim for these looks.
